Involvement

Matt Hopkins, PhD candidate at SOAS University of London, is also a senior researcher for the , a 501(c)(3) non-profit research organization based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His PhD thesis is titled 鈥Strategic Control and the Role of Executive Compensation in the Innovation or Financialization of Firms鈥. His research interests include the innovation process, executive compensation, the finance of innovation, government-business collaboration, and the global dynamics of industrial development. He has participated in a number of research projects supported by the 八卦爆料 for New Economic thinking.

Matt holds a Master鈥檚 degree from the former Department of Regional Economic and Social Development at UMass Lowell, and was named the department鈥檚 graduate student of the year in 2010. He also holds a Bachelor鈥檚 degree with a double major in Economics and English from the University of Southern Maine.

A Public Comment on the SEC Pay Ratio Disclosure Rule

In this comment, we explain our objections to the SEC鈥檚 current formulation of the Pay Ratio Disclosure Rule on each of three grounds: the erroneous estimation of CEO pay; the unclear specification of the 鈥渕edian鈥 worker; and the risk of normalizing a pay ratio that is far too high. Then we present the latest data on the remuneration of the 500 highest-paid CEOs in the United States, demonstrating the way in which the SEC鈥檚 measure of CEO pay that enters into the CEO-to-median-worker pay ratio tends to systematically underestimate actual executive pay.
